1. What are the requirements to participate in the music program?
All ensembles except jazz band and lab band (auditions required) are open to all students. While prior musical experience is not required, it is highly recommended. Percussion spots are limited in Band, and where necessary, percussionists may be recommended for one of the Percussion Ensembles as an alternative to Band.
2. How does the audition process for jazz and lab band work? Students interested in auditioning for Jazz Band (advanced ensemble) or Lab Band (developmental jazz band) should see Mr. Vaughan in the Spring to obtain audition materials to work on over the summer. In August, Mr. Vaughan holds a two or three day jazz mini-camp where students can work on their audition materials as a group and sign up for auditions, which are held during the first few weeks of school. In order to participate in Jazz or Lab bands, students must also be enrolled in either Band, Strings, or a Percussion Ensemble. Why? Because technique is developed in these ensembles which is very important for musicians participating in the faster paced Jazz and Lab Bands.
3. Are performances optional? Music students are required to participate in all performances listed on the calendar and families are encouraged to plan for these well in advance. Exceptions will be granted on a case-by-case basis.
4. What costs will a music student's parents incur? All new music students will need a Hillview music shirt (around $15), and must provide the required pants, socks, belt, and shoes as per the Behavior Guidelines. If a bus is required for transportation to performances outside of the area, a small surcharge will be collected. For performances at Giants games, students will be required to purchase a ticket. Magic Music Days in Disneyland (every other year) costs considerably more ($300 or more). As always, scholarships are available by request.
5. What is your grading policy?
Academic grades are based upon preparation, participation, and achievement. Components include progress within the class, quiz/homework scores, and concert attendance. Effort grades are based on consistent practice slips, preparedness for rehearsals (bringing instrument and music) and individual dedication and commitment to creating music and the desire to improve.
Citizenship is based upon individual responsibility, classroom behavior, and overall attitude and demeanor.
6. What volunteer opportunities are available? Like any core class, the music department has room parents too! There are several areas that require ongoing assistance and some that only require time at the beginning of the year. Volunteers may sign up at the Back-To-School coffee on the first day of school or at Back-To-School night to help with rosters, department communications, shirt orders, performances, music library, music scrapbook, music website, fundraising, music potluck, concert programs, promotional graphics, decorations, Giants game, field trip driving, and more!
