Hillview Music Policies & Procedures

Students & Parents, After reading the following, please print and sign the attached Music Agreement and return it to Mr. Vaughan.

Goals for the Instrumental Music Program

1. That students enjoy performing music for themselves and for audiences.

2. That students develop their instrumental skills to the best of their ability.

3. That students improve their large group ensemble skills.

4. That students broaden their exposure to the history and theory of music.

5 .That students perform a variety of styles of music.

Expectations

1. Each student must have instrument, music, and supplies at every rehearsal. Three unexcused misses will mean a detention after school and/or a call home. In order to be excused from playing, the student must have a note from a parent.

2. Each student may use only his own instrument or the one assigned to him/her. This includes the percussion instruments. Disciplinary action will result if a student plays on someone else’s instrument. Students who use a school instrument are responsible for repairs due to misuse.

3. During rehearsal, no talking or playing out of turn. If the director has to speak to a student because of inappropriate behavior more than twice during a rehearsal, disciplinary action will be taken. If there are continued disruptions by a student, appropriate action will be taken - parent conference, loss of seat ranking, transfer to another ensemble, or suspension from all bands.

4. Scheduled performances are a required part of class work. Make sure to check the performance calendar for all applicable dates.

5. Concert dress for boys and girls is the Hillview Music shirt, khaki slacks or knee length skirt (no cargo pants!), belt, black socks and black shoes.

6. Only Students with signed and returned permission slips will be allowed to participate in off campus performances on school days. No Exceptions!

7.Very Important! At all performances, including those at school, students are expected to stay for the duration of the entire performance and be respectful audiences for their fellow musicians. There will be absolutely no running around, leaving the performance venue, or talking while other ensembles are performing.

8. Grades will be based on a combination of class participation, homework, playing tests, written assignments, and performances. A student’s grade will be lowered if he/she has an unexcused absence from a performance.

Grades will be determined as follows:
