Last Week of School and Farewell From Vice Principal Joy Shmueli
| Dear Parents,
The end of
the year is overwhelming and crazy all at once. But at the same time
it's very exciting. Hopefully, I can help clear up any confusion about
our last week together.
Monday, June 7 - We'll be on an assembly
schedule. The 7th and 8th graders will be going to the 8th grade Awards
Assembly. Parents of students receiving awards have been notified. We
ask that only those parents attend as we do not have the space to open
it up to the general public. We hope you understand. Sixth graders
will have an alternate activity during that time.
Tuesday, June 8 - regular bell schedule. 7th
and 8th grade students will attend our eighth-grade graduation speaker assembly. Two representatives from each eighth grade core
were chosen by their classmates to speak. Of the eighteen, three to four
students will be chosen to speak at the ceremony itself. This is not a
parent-attended activity. T During 6° and 7°, eighth graders will
receive their yearbooks and enjoy some time together signing them.
Wednesday, June 9 - The winners of our year-long spirit competition--the 8th grade class and the 7th-grade Block H holders will be going to Raging Waters. They will
leave at 9:30am and will return at 4:30. Students/families are
responsible for arranging transportation home from Hillview. Permission
slips went home last week and are due by the time school starts the day
of the trip.
Thursday, June 10 - The first hour of the day, the 8th
graders will run through their first ceremony rehearsal and then will
get on busses and head to Great America. Permission slips went home and
were due June 1st. If your child hasn't turned it in, please do so
immediately. They will return at 4pm, and will need to arrange for
transportation home. 6th and 7th graders will spend the afternoon
signing their yearbooks.
Friday, June 11- Our last day of school! School
gets out at 11:35am. Please arrange for transportation. You should
also send your child to school with a bag (or two) to empty the contents
of their lockers to bring stuff home. 6th and 7th graders will have
field activities and parties, while 8th graders spend the morning
continuing to prepare for the graduation ceremony that evening.
Graduation will take place on our blacktop Friday evening at 5pm. The ceremony lasts
approximately one hour and 15 minutes. There is a reception to follow,
hosted by our 7th grade families. Everyone is welcome to attend
graduation. Families are not permitted to reserve seats until 4pm. For more information on graduation, please see the following link: http://cms.hillviewpto.org/node/3265
I
want to wish you all a wonderful, relaxing summer.
Thank you
for a fantastic nine years here at Hillview. It has been amazing, and
full of incredible memories. I will miss you dearly.
~Joy

Attention 7th-Grade Parents |
It is a Hillview tradition for the 7th graders to
provide refreshments for the 8th grade graduation, so that the 8th grade
parents can share this special day with their families. So we need each
7th grade student to bring 2 dozen baked goods such as brownies,
cookies, or lemon bars to the library by noon on June 11 (last day of school). Please use
disposable plates or trays. Please participate in giving our 8th graders
a warm send off.
We also are in great need of volunteers to help in
this process: before school collecting goodies, before and during
reception. Please contact Alys Smith at legalmommyof2@gmail.com to sign up to
volunteer. Thanks.

PTO Fundraiser |
LEARN ABOUT
THE PTO'S NEW GIFT CARD FUNDRAISER
Hillview's
PTO is beginning a new fundraiser with Great Lakes Scrip Center (GLSC) where
Hillview families can buy gift cards that they would normally use and
earn money for the PTO at the same time. There are hundreds of retailers
to choose from and gift cards can be purchased online at the GLSC
website with Hillview PTO's Enrollment Code or at the school during
specified times. Simply, Hillview's PTO purchases the cards at a
discount, you pay face value, and the PTO keeps the difference. It
really adds up over the course of a year. To learn more, go to the following links: www.glscrip.com and www.shopwithscrip.com

numbered orders will be available in the Office starting on June 1, 2010. Come by
and pick one up or have your child bring one home. Checks are
preferable for payment. Make checks payable to HILLVIEW SCHOOL (NOT

M-A Challenge Day 2010 | |
Volunteers Needed for Challenge Day 2010 - BE THE CHANGE! Join us Monday and/or Tuesday, November 1st or 2nd for the memorable one-day workshop that promotes compassion, communication and community building among the Class of 2014. It's a great way for freshmen parents to get involved at M-A --- a one day commitment that helps our teens break down barriers and create new levels of empathy and respect. Come participate in one of the most meaningful volunteer opportunities of the year.
Adult volunteers are critical to the program's success. Volunteer opportunities for both days include (tentative times):
- Small Group Facilitator: 8:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
- Registration: 8:00 a.m. - 9:15 a.m.
- Lunch 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Volunteer for any of three roles, pick the date which works best for you, then e-mail your preference (be sure to specify the date) to Stasia Grose or Ellen Mouchawar at challengeday@mabearspta.org. Please put "Challenge Day Volunteer" in the subject line. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students!

M-A Parent Volunteer Opportunities |
Is your 8th grader going to M-A in the fall? If so, we would love you to become a parent volunteer! There are numerous opportunities to get involved as a parent at M-A and one of the ways to get linked in to some of the PTA-related action is this:
Email us back at adminsupport@mabearspta.org and we will add your name and email to the list of parents that are contacted throughout the school year when the school's administration needs parent volunteers.
For example, if you would like to get involved immediately, we are already recruiting volunteers to help with Arena check-in that will take place on:
* Wednesday, August 11 from 1 to 5 pm for 9th and 12th graders, and on
* Thursday, August 12 from 8:30am to 12:30pm for 10th and 11th graders
Please let us know if you are able to help on any of these days.
Also, if you would like to help with schedule distribution on the first day of school on Wednesday, August 18 from 7 to 9am, please email us back and let us know. This is a great way to share the excitement of the first day of high school in a relatively unobtrusive way ;-)
If you have any questions, please contact us.
We look forward to seeing you next year!

The Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation is
pleased to
announce a record grant of $2.35 million to
the Menlo Park City
School District
for the 2010-2011 school year. This gift will
fully
fund 17 teachers for our schools, including full time elementary music,
art and
library specialists. We did it with the help of more than 1,100 families,
teachers, district staff and
community members who supported our fundraising campaign this year to
keep our
schools strong. We are truly fortunate to live in such a dedicated and
caring
community that puts education for all first. We look forward to working
together again next year to support our excellent schools and teachers.
We are your Foundation and we hope that every district family
joins us moving forward, because when we all
join together,
the education for our children will continue to get better.

| Parenting Tip of the Week |
Go somewhere/do something different with your teen. Doing something out
of the ordinary gives you a great chance to make a connection. If
possible let him choose. Be open to your teen's ideas about things you
wouldn't usually do.
