Portrait of an Eating Disorder

notes from a presentation to Hillview eighth graders by Dr. Tonja Krautter

“Anorexia has the highest lethality rate of any psychiatric disorder, including depression and substance abuse,” said Dr. Tonja Krautter, a licensed clinical psychologist and licensed social worker who specializes in childhood and adolescent issues. Speaking to Hillview’s eighth-grade classes last week, Dr. Krautter explained that anorexia nervosa is an extremely aggressive disease that snowballs quickly – patients can experience life-threatening weight loss in a matter of months. “And the longer the person has the illness, the more likely it is that he or she will die from it,” she says. To help define and understand the disease, Dr. Krautter outlined the following signs and symptoms.

Beyond Facebook - The Dangers of Social Mapping

Parents need to be aware of a new kind of social networking called social mapping.  These free, downloadable apps, including Loopt, Foursquare, and Gowalla, use geographic information to connect people to each other and to places. Unless privacy settings for these programs are set to the highest level, these programs can basically tell users where your child is.  To learn more, click the following link from Common Sense Media:

PE Updates as of March 7

  1. Valuables: if valuables are brought to class (cell phones, money, jewelry, iPods, etc.), we STRONGLY URGE students to lock them in lockers and not to leave them in backpacks.  It would be better if these items were not brought to class in the first place. We also remind students to take care of clothing.  The lost and found is getting very full again with clothes.  They will soon be donated to a local charity if not claimed.
  2. Current units in Phys Ed classes will be Ultimate Frisbee/Tennis Court Soccer/Indoor Hockey. Fitness activities will continue on a regular basis Thursdays. 7th graders have begun state-mandated fitness testing.
  3. Students interested in joining the “Noah and the Shooting Arc” Club are welcome to attend. Club meets on Friday mornings before school from 8:00-8:30. Students will be able to practice basketball shooting while “Noah” talks to them.
  4. Questions regarding Phys Ed should be directed to Mr. Bell (hbell@mpcsd.org) or Mr. Imura (eimura@mpcsd.org) Phone: 326-4341 ext 2811 and 2812.
